Fish On!

The run has started and we are catching lots of fish, us and the other thousands of people fishing. We caught limits yesterday and today and almost had our limits Tuesday night. The have cancelled commercial fishing for now as the fish count is real low. There was talk they may close the sport fishing season, but for now it is open. The freezer in our rig is full and our friends the Weber's 7 c.u. freezer is full and they just bought a 5 c.u. and that I am sharing and helping fill. Here are some pictures from today, one is of Bill & Les showing off Bill's new compact fishing pole, the other is our limit (9) of Reds today. We had rain all day yesterday and mostly cloudy until about 1:00 p.m. it is clear and beautiful right now with temps in the low 60's.

Before/After

In between Fishing and visiting we fixed the microwave shelf that ripped off the wall on the ride up. The solution was "gluing" (with Liquid Nails) a 1/2" piece of plywood to the back wall and re-attaching the supports. I finished the plywood before we attached it. I think it looks good and hope it holds for the life of the trailer. Thanks Bill & Wayne for the expertise and help.

July 21, 2017

Fishing has picked up and I think I finally have my "mo-jo" back for fishing the Kenai River. It seems every year it takes me a while to get the knack again. We left for the river this morning at 2:20 a.m. and had lines in the water by 3:15 a.m. After losing a few fish and having to release several more foul hooked ones I got my limit of three. Les got two, Bill three and Wayne one. Fishing pressure is heavy between 6 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Tonight we are having salmon, potato salad and snappy tomatoes for supper. Bills Nephew Wayne flies back to Tennessee tomorrow. It has been fun having him visit and fish with us.

July 16, 2017 - Kay's Birthday

Today we went to the Meacham Camp for Kay's birthday. Rich grilled chicken breasts, hamburgers and hot dogs and we had pasta salad, baked beans and some other fixings. We had carrot birthday cake for dessert and sang happy birthday. It turned out to be a very nice day especially being able to spend time with friends. Fishing continues to be slow, we haven't fished much the last couple of days, but will venture out tomorrow to see if our luck has changed.

July 12, 2017 - Another Year Older...

Yesterday I celebrated my 57th birthday, thank you for all the well wishes by e-mail, phone and in person. Otherwise for the most part it was just another day in Alaska, we started the day by driving Rick to Ninilchik where he picked up his halibut fishing charter, next was a stop by Kasilof for breakfast and then back to the trailer to regroup and try fishing without any luck. At 3:00 p.m. it was time to go back down and pick Rick up, Rick was one of the lucky two of six on his boat to catch a halibut, a nice 36-40 pounder. After we got home Nancy had a great birthday supper ready of sausage in marinara sauce and seafood in Alfredo sauce complete with salad, bread and birthday cake. After supper we cut, packaged and froze the halibut and then it was a shower and off to bed. Today we left at 7:45 a.m. to take Rick to the Anchorage airport and pick up Bill's Nephew Wayne. Our trip to Anchorage also included stops at the Russian River, Cabela's, Lowe's, Great Alaskan Holidays and Smashburger. Once again Nancy had supper ready for us when we got home. After supper I changed bedding on the two beds and did some computer work while Les and Bill went fishing. Wayne also stayed home for some much needed sleep.

July 08, 2017

We are settled in at St. Theresa. Rick & I have spent some time touring different areas around Soldotna and Sterling, we even spent an afternoon driving to Homer. We drove Swanson River Road, Skilak Lake Loop, Kenai Spur Hwy. to the end at Captain Cook State Park that included a stop at Kassik's Brewery. Our trip to Homer included side trips to the Kasilof Beach to watch the dip netters, Anchor Point to watch the unique boat launching process and the North Fork Road Loop. During our Homer trip we did see 3 moose. Les & Bill have tried "flipping for salmon in the Kenai, but have not had any luck. On July 1st we went to Catch-Em Fish Camp for the 13th annual 4th of July Party. It is always fun to spend time with our Alaska friends and eat some good food. Yesterday, (7th) we left at 5am and drove to Seward to spend some time snagging, we ended up catching 13 nice reds, 7 smaller reds/pinks and 2 flounder. ON our way home we stopped and had pizza supper at Magpyes in Sterling. The weather continues to be cooler than the average with daytime temps in the 50's and nights in the high 40's. We have had more cloudy days than sunny days since getting into Alaska on June 8th. We smoked 100+ salmon bellies on July 5th/6th. They turned out great and have been enjoyed at camp and we put some in the freezer. Rick is scheduled to go Halibut fishing on Tuesday the 11th with a charter out of Ninilchik, but they will launch in Anchor Point. Rick will then fly home on the 12th.

July 01, 2017

The last day before we left Seward Rick went on a Resurrection Bay Cruise complete with a Prime Rib & Salmon lunch. Even though it was a cloudy, rainy, rough day Rick said he enjoyed himself and saw whales, seals, orcas, sea lions, otters, Mountain Sheep and many birds. While Rick was cruising; Les, Bill and I fished for the last time and were lucky enough to hit the run right and limited out putting 18 salmon in the freezer. Friday morning Bill fixed biscuits with bacon for us, afterwards we packed things up inside and out in preparation for our 90 miles trip southwest to Soldotna/Sterling. We arrived at St. Theresa about noon and got our rigs set up for the next chapter of our summer. After relaxing around camp for a bit we went and visited Rich & Kay at the Meacham Camp and then it was off to Magpyes for pizza supper. Rick & I spent the evening watching Invictus before going to bed around 10:30. Saturday morning Bill fixed Hash and eggs with toast for us before we headed into Fred Meyer in Soldotna for some groceries. This afternoon we will go to The Fish Camp at 3:00 p.m. for the Lindstrom 4th of July party.
