Our trip to Alaska this year started when we left Coloma on May 20th and came to an end after 120 days at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon (September 17th when we got back home. Since we left we put on 11,420 miles, caught over 150 Salmon, had 2 flat tires and saw countless scenes of beauty and wildlife, not to mention unforgettable times with family and friends.
Yesterday (3rd) we drove from Soldotna to Seward, it was the first day after many there were no pilot cars escorting people through the fire. It was sad to see how much has burned and continues to burn. Some pictures show smoke, others show clouds. The picture with the golden aspen and green spruce was from the now burned area in 2012. After setting up we did go fishing and saw some Pink Salmon spawning and caught one nice Silver Salmon and saw a rainbow (not trout :))
This August has been unseasonably warm (70's) and VERY dry. There are a number of active fires in the State, the biggest and closest one to us is called the Swan Lake Fire and has burned over 150,000 acres. There are about 600 firefighters working the fire, it has and continues to close the Sterling Hwy. at times. Some of the pictures included are results of the fire. You can tell fall is coming as the aspen and birch are turning their fall gold color and the wild cranberries are ripe and ready for picking.
We are also part owners of an inflatable boat that can be used on the Kenai River and maybe even Halibut fishing.
Les & Nancy from Merrill, WI left earlier this month and are now back in Wisconsin and our Chetek friends, Jim & Donna are planning to pull out this morning (29th). We are still at St. Theresa near Soldotna and plan to pull out Tuesday the 3rd and go back to Seward for a few days and try our luck at Silver fishing. Then it will be off to Wasilla to get the truck serviced before heading down to Valdez for a short visit before heading out and back to Wisconsin.
Tomorrow (30th) we may head south to Homer for a sight seeing and exploring trip.
Otherwise all is going well here, thanks for looking.
It has been very warm the past several days with temperatures in the 70's and 80's, it is also very dry and there are burn restrictions in place again. It has been a good Red Salmon year in the Kenai River, consistent big runs have yielded good fishing results and our freezer is almost full, I am saving a little room in hopes of catching a few Silver Salmon. The last week we have seen a number of moose that are busy eating in preparation for winter. Our Wisconsin friends Les & Nancy pulled out yesterday to begin the journey back to Wisconsin, but not before doing some touring of Alaska. The wild cranberries are almost ripe and we should be able to pick some before we pull out sometime late August or early September.
