Some pictures from around Haines, AK

We spent the afternoon checking the area around Haines out.  We bought some Halibut for supper and some shrimp for a treat later on during our travels, Rosalie also found some fabric to buy for future projects.

It was a warm 70+ degrees and sunny day.

Traveling between Haines Junction YT and Haines, AK on the Haines Hwy (3)

We drove the Haines Hwy yesterday, it takes about 3 1/2 hours to drive.  We started in the YT, drove through BC and then crossed the border into AK, making it to Haines, AK about 4:30 p.m.  The U.S. border officers asked a lot of questions and walked inside the trailer, but didn't "toss" us.  They did recommed we not try and bring the 2 1/2 dozen eggs back into Canada, so we had eggs and hash for supper and eggs and sausage for breakfast.  I did some research and will be freezing the eggs we have left before we leave.

The drive to Haines was one of the most scenic drives I have done and words cannot describe the beauty. (We hope to take more pictures on the drive out tomorrow)  The road was in good repair and easy to drive.

We will spend today exploring Haines, a small coastal community.

We have limited internet tonight so I am blogging in the restaurant at Teslin, YK, so no pictures , maybe tomorrow night.

Today we saw 2 moose, 2 moutain Goats, lots of Bison and 4 black bears.  Much of the day was spent driving in the mountains in the fog and rain, but no snow...

Traveling The Alaska Highway

We started our journey on the Alaska Hwy. today, it was an uneventful day, but we did see 1 moose a long ways off the road.  Tomorrow is the day we typically will see lots of wildlife.  We pulled into Triple G RV Park at Fort Nelson, BC around 6:30pm and shortly after getting set up were welcomed with a thunderstorm.  It is sprinkling now, but hopefully it quits before we do our last walk with the dogs.

After leaving Havre Montana we headed NW on Hwy 2 towards Shelby, MT,  There isn't much to see except BIG farm fields,  After leaving Shelby we continued north on Hwy. 2 until branching off on Hwy. 89 which was supposed to go along the mountains, well it went directly through the mountains on a narrow two lane twisty curvy road.  The scenery was great, but it was hard to take my eyes off the road.

We crossed the border into Canada at 2:00 pm at the port of Carway without incident and drove until about 6:30 p.m. when we pulled into an RV park near Red Deer, Alberta.

We made good progress again today and found an RV park near Grand Prairie Alberta to stay at.  Tomorrow we will begin our journey on the Alaska Hwy.

Big Sky Montana

We finished driving through North Dakota and made it about halfway across Montana and are spending the night at Evergreen RV Park at Havre, MT.  We are thinking about trying a new route and instead of crossing at Sweetgrass we may cross further west at Piegan on hwy. 89.

We had great driving weather today and were able to put 500+ miles behind us. The scenery wasn't to exciting, but we did see more ducks.  The area around Williston, ND still amazes me at how much it continues to grow with no organization as the oil boom looks in full swing.

We should cross into Canada tomorrow where we will spend the next few days making our way across Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon before making it to Alaska.

Just Passing Through

No pictures today, we got on the road this morning leaving Saginaw, MN at 9:30. 400 miles later at about 6:30 p.m. we pulled into Oakwood Inn & RV Park in Rugby, ND, it is a small peaceful park with a nice dog walking area and the price is right.

While walking the dogs we saw another RV'r here from WI, we said hello and learned the two guys are from Sheboygan and also heading to AK.  After our dog walk Ken made Mac & Cheese with peas and smoked tuna for supper, accompanied with a side salad and a left over piece of chicken.

Then it was time to relax and spend some quality time with the dogs and read e-mails and watch some tv.

Tomorrow we will finish driving through ND and make it most of the way through  MT.  If all goes well we should cross the border into Canada Sunday.

The weather has been in the 70's with mostly clear skies, but there is a chance of showers tomorrow afternoon.  Today we drove through the pothole region of ND and saw lots of ducks and geese; Mallards, Pintails, Redheads, Canvasbacks, Shovelers, Bluewing Teal and coot, I also saw several Yellow Head Blackbirds.

Good Morning 05-22-2015

Where we spent our first night

Sometimes plans don't come together as expected.  We woke up Thursday morning figuring to put the finishing touches on house cleaning and odds/ends before hitting the road between 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., well it was more like 1:30 p.m.  We had an uneventful trip and stopped at the Veterans Memorial Wayside near Spooner to let the boys and us out for a break.  Our next stop was in Superior for fuel and then off to Duluth for supper with friends before bedding down for the night at Saginaw Campground at Saginaw, MN.

We awoke to bright sunshine and a great day to continue heading west across MN.

We're Home

10 days after leaving Sterling Alaska we pulled into our cabin in the woods in Coloma Wisconsin last night at 8:30 p.m.  It was a good trip with no significant mechanical breakdowns, however we did need to have a trailer tire changed in Fosston, MN that had a slow leak.

We traveled home with our good friends Jim and Donna Meacham.  It was the first time we traveled with someone else and it worked very well.  We planned our trip and final stopping place together and then met each night and had supper together before taking off the next morning.  We each traveled at our our pace, at times in sight of each other and other times separate.

If you will recall we left Coloma on May 17th and traveled 13, 804 miles.

We spent today unloading things from the trailer and putting them away in preparation of cleaning and storing the trailer until next spring when we plan to head up to Alaska again.
