We Made It

The hitch and generator are out of the truck

And the trailer parked and ready for unloading and cleaning
We are home after another exciting and enjoyable summer in Alaska.  We enjoyed sharing our Alaska adventure with you and hope you enjoyed being a part of our trip.  If you recall we left for Alaska on May 21st.  We enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends, we also enjoyed renewing friendships and spending birthdays and anniversaries with some of you.

We had a record year fishing, bringing home a freezer full of fish and being able to mail or send fish home with/to friends.  Like years past we saw lots of wildlife and the dogs even met a moose face to face (hopefully not a frequent occurrence).  Just before leaving for home the dogs had a second face to face introduction to a moose that resulted in a charge at Ken that had me scurrying towards some trees and a close 10 yard face to face.

This was our third driving trip to The Great Land a 4000 mile one way trip.  We put a total of 12, 168 miles on from start to finish.  On our way up we broke a spring on the trailer between Tok and Glennallen and limped into Anchorage where we had 4 new springs put on.

Now we are unpacking the trailer, putting things away and moving back into the house.  We hope to head back to Alaska next spring, stayed tuned for those details.

We don't post often, but you can follow us on our Log Cabin In The Woods blog at    http://logcabinlivingcoloma.blogspot.com/

Almost Home

Making good progress on our drive home, left Minot ND during a thunderstorm this morning and pulled into an RV park just west of Duluth, MN and had a thunderstorm just after getting set up.  We will have breakfast with friends in Duluth tomorrow morning and then make the final push for home, hopefully there by tomorrow night.

Progress Report

Day one we made it to Tok and stayed at the Sourdough RV Park.  Day two we entered Canada abd began our journey on the Alaska Highway.  The roads were rough to say the least and we also had rain, snow and a mix most of the day.  The mountains had fresh snow and temps were in the 30's.  Sunday night found us east of Whitehorse, we hoped to make it to Teslin, but poor road conditions didn't allow that.  Monday we woke up to a blanket of snow, the roads were slushy, but ok.  A few miles down the road and the snow dissipated, but we did have rain on/off throughout the day.  Monday night finds us in Toad River.  There is significant road construction between Muncho Lake and Toad River as they are straitening the road.

Last post before we start for home tomorrow morning

It has been another fun summer in Alaska, we started our summer in Alaska at Haines, then stayed for a month in Seward before ending our summer 6 miles east of Soldotna.  Once again it was fun to renew old friendships and make new ones, Alaska is beautiful and addicting.

Before leaving we celebrated one last supper together at Acapulco restaurant on the northeast side of Soldotna.

Tomorrow morning we hope to pull out before 9:00 a.m. and make it at least as far as Tok, look for our updates as time and internet access allows.

The end is near

Sorry for no posts recently, we have stayed busy fishing and spending time with friends.  The kids are back to school and fall is quickly coming.  The trees are starting to change and you can feel a touch of fall in the air.  We have had several nights in the 30's, but no frost yet.  The Cranberries are almost ripe, but we haven't picked any yet.

We have had a change of plans and instead of leaving the end of September will begin our journey home from Soldotna on Saturday August 29th with an anticipated arrival home date of 09/07/2015.

Look for more pictures as we begin our travel home.

It has been an amazing summer spending time with friends and making new ones, the fishing was phenomenal and we are bring back all the fish the freezer will hold.

Thanks for spending your summer following us.....

The Freezer Is Full

We have filled the 7 cf freezer in the trailer with 138 Salmon and are using a freezer at the park for additional fish, it has been a very successful fishing season and we still hope to go back to Seward for the Silver run.

Anniversary Outing

We celebrated our anniversary with friends, at Froso's Restaurant in Soldotna for a great supper and later a fireside chat at Meacham's.

Bill's Halibut Fishing Trip

Today Bill went fishing with Charlie, a guy we met Red fishing, they went out of Homer and Bill was lucky to catch these two 20#+ Halibut.  Congratulations Bill!

I was lucky enough to clean my first Halibut, easier than I thought.

Moose

We had several moose sightings in camp yesterday, probably all the same moose.  It started out yesterday late morning while we were taking the dogs for a walk and they encountered a cow moose and her calves.  This was their first face to face meeting with a moose, Casper found them first and then Spirit ran to see what all the crashing was.  They didn't bark and the moose chased them away and they came back to us when called. The moose wasn't afraid of us or the dogs and kept an eye on us to make sure we were leaving.

Then about 9:15 last night we had a cow moose walk through camp and eventually hook up with her two calves.  We think it was the same group from earlier.  It is always nice to see moose and now the dogs have met one in person and not from inside the truck.  I wonder what they will do if they meet a Grizzly?

Kasilof Beach

We took the boys to the Kasilof Beach today, the tide was out and we had a good walk.  The boys got a bit dirty and got to rinse off in Crooked Creek afterwards.

The Last Supper

Tonight we were treated to a wonderful supper of Salmon, Crab, Shrimp, Brussels Sprouts and Mushroom Alfredo made by Nancy and a show piece dessert made by Edna.  It was a bittersweet gathering as we say goodbye to our new friends Les & Nancy who plan to pull out tomorrow morning to continue their trip.  It won't be goodbye forever as Les and Nancy live in Merrill, WI and plan to come back to AK next year.

Another Birthday Party

Today we celebrated Kay Shook's birthday at Donna & Jim Meacham's house.  Despite the cool, breezy and rainy weather we had a great "summer cookout" meal with burgers, reindeer sausages and all the fixings.  After eating we all moved indoors for cake, ice cream and card reading.  Fun was had by all.  We are truly blessed with so many friends.

"Three Kenai Reds"

Fished the Kenai River for 5 hours this morning and finally caught a limit of Reds, 2 smaller ones and one bigger one.  No hits for 2 1/2 hours then the action picked up.

Oh Bull!

While in the trailer this morning this guy walked next to the rig 20' away, out across the parking lot and past the owners house before moving out of sight.  He walked at a normal pace (for a moose), but didn't give us much opportunity for a picture.

Dog Days Of Summer

We took the boys to the water park (Scout Lake) the other day for some wet fun.
